Things to do in London on 3 May – The Festival of Britain was opened by George VI on this day in 1951, in an attempt to recreate the Victorian exhibition of 1851 in post-war Britain. The event was held on the bombed-out South Bank. The only building that still survives today is the Royal Festival Hall.
