The National Portrait Gallery will become the first major museum to put on an exhibition devoted to Jenny Saville - one of the world's foremost contemporary painters.

Since bursting onto the scene in the early 1990s with her acclaimed degree show at the Glasgow School of Art, and her ground-breaking work Propped, Saville has played a leading role in re-invigorating the genre of figurative painting.

Originally influenced by the likes of Rembrandt, Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud, Saville was inspired to integrate abstraction into her figurative painting through the work of artists like Willem de Kooning and Cy Twombly.

Created in close collaboration with the artist, the chronological display will bring together 50 works from across the entire span of her career, allowing visitors to follow her evolving techniques through small-scale charcoal drawings, large-scale oil paintings, and her visceral portraits created with thick layers of paint.

There will also be a selection of drawings on the subject of pregnancy and motherhood, and some brand-new works on display for the very first time.
