The National Portrait Gallery welcomes the Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award back for 2025. The competition celebrates the very best in contemporary portraiture by self-taught and established painters, demonstrating a range and complexity of skill in traditional and innovative new techniques.

The competition is open to artists over the age of eighteen and regularly attracts around 40,000 entrants from 100 different countries. The shortlisted artworks are then seen by over 6 million people.
Last year's award winners were Before It's Ruined (or an Unrealized Mean Side) by Rebecca Orcutt, Jacqueline With Still Life by Anthony Williams, Lying by Catherine Chambers, and Zizi (main image) by Isabella Watling.
