The Royal Academy of Arts has joined forces with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam to explore the influence that Van Gogh had on the work of Anselm Kiefer.
Van Gogh painted his final works in 1890, and seventy-two years later a young Anselm Kiefer decided to follow in his footsteps, through the Netherlands, Belgium and Paris, and finally to the south of France and his rented house in Arles.

Kiefer would enjoy a life-long fascination with Van Gogh's work for the next sixty years, informing both the subjects and techniques of his monumental paintings and sculptures.
The exhibition will explore the influence that the Dutch artist had on Kiefer by displaying their works side-by-side. The exhibition will also feature some of Kiefer's new works that have never been shown before.
