Tate Modern will be celebrating the centenary of Picasso's landmark painting The Three Dancers by exploring his fascination with performers.

Picasso was both inspired by the bullfighters, flamenco dancers and entertainers that he painted, but also borrowed from their capacity for transformation to create his own public persona of a creative genius and outsider.

Staged by the contemporary artist Wu Tsang and the author Enrique Fuenteblanca, the Theatre Picasso exhibition will showcase over 45 drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures and textiles from the Tate's own collection, as well as important loans from European galleries - some of which have never been seen in the UK before.

At the centre of the exhibition will be The Three Dancers itself, an important part of his evolution as an artist that sat at a crossroads between madness, philosophy and the avant-garde. It marked a break from his classical phase to his use of emotional violence and expressionist distortion.

Also on display will be the wool and silk tapestry Minotaur (1935), Weeping Woman (1937), Nude Woman in a Red Armchair (1932), Girl In A Chemise (1905), Horse With A Youth In Blue (1905-6), Bullfight Scene (1960), Acrobat (1930) and Henri-George Clouzot's film The Mystery of Picasso (1959).
