Broadway producer Max Bialystock is out of money and has to resort to wooing elderly women to raise finance for his shows. But then he wonders whether he can make more profit from a flop than a hit.

If the show closes after one night then he won't have to pay back any of his investors... so he hatches a plan with his accountant to write the world's worst show and turn it into the biggest flop in theatre history.

After trawling New York for a sure-fire disaster they settle on Springtime For Hitler - a love story written by a deranged German fan, Franz Liebkind, and stuff it full of unforgettable characters, offensive gags and inappropriate musical numbers, hiring a terrible director and lead actor to boot.

But their scheme backfires spectacularly when the show turns into an unexpected hit, landing rave reviews and raptuous applause.
