The critically acclaimed Broadway show Good Night, Oscar is coming to the Barbican for a strictly limited 7-week run, with Sean Hayes from TV's Will & Grace reprising his Tony Award-winning role as Oscar Levant.
Jack Paar is the host of the America's hottest late-night talk-show, and his favourite guest is the ultimate TV wildcard - comic actor Oscar Levant - who's witty one-liners include "There's a fine line between genius and insanity; I have erased this line."
Oscar then goes on to prove exactly that when he appears live on the show, in an episode that Jack Parr, the studio audience - and the rest of America - won't forget in a hurry. As the cameras start rolling Oscar takes center stage for a night of razor-sharp jokes, breathtaking musical moments... and unfiltered truth.
American TV and film star Oscar Levant
Oscar started out as a piano prodigy who made a name for himself playing Gershwin. He was also a composer, a conductor, and a talented actor who appeared in over a dozen Hollywood movies including The Band Wagon and An American in Paris.
He often struggled with his mental health but incorporated it into his routine using self-deprecating wit, once joking that he "was thrown out of a mental hospital for depressing the other patients".
During the 1950s his neurotic energy powered everything he did which made him a fantastic - but slightly terrifying - guest on TV talk shows, in an era when showbusiness was very much about polish and perfection.
Sean Hayes' virtuosic take looks behind the showmanship to a deeper, more complex character, masterfully exploring the fragility of genius.
