The Guildhall Art Gallery will be putting on an exhibition or work by the pioneering artist Evelyn De Morgan (1855-1919) - one of the most remarkable painters of the Victorian era.

Her richly coloured paintings and beautifully draped figures explore the themes of feminism and spirituality, and her passionate rejection of war can be seen through a series of paintings that she made for the Red Cross in response to the horrors of World War I.

Visitors will also be able to explore her evolving techniques and artistic process, and discover some of the cultural influences that influenced her work such as the theatrical performances and sermons that she attended in London.

The exhibition will include some of the studies that she made at the Slade School of Art whilst still a teenager, some rarely seen images from the De Morgan Foundation Collection, and later paintings from her exhibitions at the Grosvenor Gallery, New Gallery and Fine Art Society.

Also on display will be two newly-restored artworks that will be shown to the public for the very first time, and two more paintings by contemporary artist Paul Francis Walker that provide a faithful recreation of two paintings that were lost in a warehouse fire.
