Visionary director Robert Icke has re-imagined Sophocles' ancient Greek tragedy as a modern political thriller.

Widely regarded by scholars as a masterpiece, Oedipus Rex is the second of Sophocles' three surviving plays about Oedipus, and tells the story of how he became King of Thebes after murdering his father and marrying his mother.

Totally unaware that he himself was the killer, Oedipus sets about trying to find his father's murderer in order to end a plague that has befallen Thebes. When he discovers the horrific truth he gouges out his own eyes and his mother hangs herself.

Robert Icke has shifted the action to the modern day, when the polls are predicting a landslide victory on election night.

Starring Mark Strong & Lesley Manville

The star-studded cast includes Olivier award winner Mark Strong (Kingsman, The Imitation Game, Zero Dark Thirty) and Oscar nominee Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread, Mr Turner), who recently played the part of Princess Margret in The Crown.
