The Taylor Wessing Photo Portrait Prize is back at the National Portrait Gallery for its 17th year, showcasing some of the best work by talented young photographers and established professionals.
The prize is one of the most important photography competitions in the world, and features a wide range of images from formal commissioned works to more intimate moments that capture family and friends. Entrants are encouraged to interpret the word 'portrait' in its widest sense - emphasising a subject's identity as individuals.
2024 shortlist of four photographers
The four photographers on this year's shortlist were selected from 4,847 entries by a panel of expert judges. The winner will receive a commission worth $8,000 and be invited to create a brand-new work for the National Portrait Gallery's collection.
Adam Ferguson for the series Big Sky; Jesse Navarre for the series I'll Come Following You; Tjitske Sluis for the series Out Of Love, Out Of Necessity; Steph Wilson for the series Ideal Mother.
In Focus Artist - Diana Markosian
There will also be an accompanying display called In Focus, which showcases a new work by an established photographer.
This year Diana Markosian will exhibit some photographs from her new publication Father, which follows her decade-long attempts at piecing together an image of a familiar stranger - her long-lost father.
