Gin is the new champagne... and London has some of the finest gin palaces on the planet!

Inside the City of London Gin Distillery

After downloading the pre-recorded audio tour onto your phone via an app, you'll be led around town to visit four of the city's most popular public houses -- The Blackfriars Inn, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, The Viaduct Tavern and Punch Tavern (drinks not included).

As you walk through the backstreets, alleyways and grand thoroughfares of London, passing the finest Victorian gin palaces that survived the Blitz, an expert historian will share some interesting stories about each location... such as how Dr Samuel Johnson frequented the Cheshire Cheese whilst writing his famous dictionary.

You'll also hear the centuries-old history of the city's gin culture from its early days in 1700, when its easy availability from the dram shops earned it the nickname Mother's Ruin, right up to the modern-day micro-distilleries that are opening up everywhere.

Gin tasting at the City of London Gin Distillery

Back in the 1700s there used to be a gin shop on practically every street, but once the Gin Craze ended they all but disappeared. For 200 years there wasn't a single one remaining... until the City of London Distillery opened in 2012.
