The empty fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square has been hosting a series of temporary artworks since 2005, turning into one of the world's most famous public art commissions.

So far it has featured everything from a Ship in a Bottle to a giant Thumb's Up sculpture and a piece of Where's Wally performance art.

It currently houses a sculpture by Samson Kambalu called Antelope, which is based on an old photograph of the pan-Africanist Baptist preacher John Chilembwe and European missionary John Chorley.

The photograph was taken at the opening of Chilembwe’s new church in Nyasaland (now Malawi), one year before led an uprising against colonial rule, during which he was killed and his church was destroyed.

The sculpture depicts Chilembwe almost twice the size of Chorley, elevating his place in the story.
