Following its sold-out run in Scotland, David Ireland's subversively funny new play The Fifth Step is coming to Soho Place for a short 11-week run.

Directed in-the-round, its an intimate portrayal of addiction starring Olivier Award-winner Jack Lowden (Dunkirk, Slow Horses) and the Emmy Award-winning Hollywood actor Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, Sherlock).

James has spent many years going to AA meetings, and agrees to start sponsoring newcomer Luka. The pair soon bond over coffee, trading their stories, and building a fragile friendship from their shared experiences.

As they approach Step 5 of the 12-step programme their conversation turns to confessionals... but neither of them are ready to hear the truth. Luka must reveal some secrets that might lead him back to alcohol, whilst James is burying some truths that threaten to destroy the delicate trust that has built up between them.

What the theatre critics say...
