Widely regarded as a masterpiece, Oedipus Rex is the second of Sophocles' three surviving plays about Oedipus. It was first performed in 429 BC and tells the story of how he became King of Thebes after murdering his father and marrying his mother.

The people turn to Oedipus - the man who solved the riddle of the Sphinx - to find his father's murderer and end a punishment plague that has befallen the city. Totally unaware that he himself was the killer, and that he's engaged in an incestual relationship, Oedipus vows to pursue the truth whatever the cost. When he uncovers the horror of his own guilt he gouges out his eyes and his mother hangs herself.

Starring Oscar winner Rami Malek

Ella Hickson's thrilling adaptation of Sophocles' play stars the Oscar and Golden Globe winner Rami Malek - best known for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody - and Olivier Award winner Indira Varma (Ellaria Sand in Game of Thrones).
