The Royal Academy of Arts is putting on the UK's largest-ever retrospective of internationally acclaimed American painter Kerry James Marshall.
His work deliberately enhances the visibility of Black figures within the traditions of Western art, to draw attention to the fact that they have been historically underrepresented in books, museums and galleries.

His murals and large-scale paintings are informed by his own memories, contemporary culture and science fiction, but always place Black figures front and centre - often in situations that are traditionally reserved for other narratives.

By using a range of different art styles from over six centuries of painting, and fitting them into his narrative of inclusion and visibility, he can comment on the past while imagining a more optimistic future.
The exhibition features around 70 of his best works organized thematically, and includes a brand-new series created specifically for this show.
