Comedy legends Steve Coogan and Armando Iannucci have joined forces to turn Stanley Kubrick's classic Cold War movie Dr Strangelove into a West End play.

Taking the chilling paranoia of the Cold War years as its backdrop, the political and military satire sees an unhinged Air Force general launching a covert strike on the Soviet Union without the US President's knowledge or permission.

The story then plays out in the tense war room where the politicians and military leaders scramble to avoid a catastrophic apocalypse.

The jet-black comedy highlights the absurdity of the nuclear arms race and its doctrine of mutually assured destruction.

Stanley Kubrick's Cold War masterpiece

Dr Strangelove was originally released in 1964 - just two years after the Cuban Missile Crisis - and quickly earned itself the status of a cinematic masterpiece.

Peter Sellers famously played three different roles in the movie: a Royal Air Force exchange officer, the President of the United States, and the wheelchair-bound German scientist Dr Strangelove.

Starring Steve Coogan (aka Alan Partridge)

BAFTA Award winning actor Steve Coogan will be stepping into Peter Sellers' sizeable shoes to take on the three different roles, in an adaptation written by The Thick Of It's Armando Iannucci.
