Named after the famous painter JMW Turner, the Turner Prize is back at Tate Britain for its 40th anniversary, showcasing four artists who are either British or based in Britain, who have made an outstanding contribution to contemporary British art over the previous year.
The four shortlisted artists
The four shortlisted artists for 2024 are Pio Abad, Claudette Johnson, Jasleen Kaur and Delaine Le Bas.
Pio Abad - Touching on the subjects of cultural loss and colonial history, Pio Abad's solo exhibition To Those Sitting In Darkness explores his upbringing in the Philippines through a collection of drawings, etchings and sculptures that depict objects on display in British museums, connecting them to people's lives today.
Claudette Johnson - Johnson's Presence exhibition at the Courtauld featured portraits of Black men and women in pastels, gouache and watercolour. Her work examined the marginalisation of Black people in Western art through portrayals of their family and friends.
Jasleen Kaur - Kaur's Alter Altar exhibition featured installations that took everyday objects such as bells, doilies and a red Ford Escort, and renegotiated their traditions and myths, reflecting on their inherited and withheld histories.
Delaine Le Bas - Her monumental immersive environments are filled with painted fabrics, costumes and sculptures, and draw upon the rich history of the Roma people and their mythologies about death, loss and renewal.
