Matthew Bourne's reinvention of Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet became one of the most successful dance theatre productions of all time when it premiered 30 years ago, picking up over thirty international awards including an Olivier and three Tonys. Now it's back at Sadler's Wells for the next generation of audiences to enjoy for the very first time.
Tchaikovsky's classic ballet re-invented
Swan Lake tells the story of how Prince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans whilst out hunting. One of the swans then transforms into the beautiful Swan Queen and he is immediately enraptured, only to discover that she's under a spell that only allows her to take human form at night.
The couple must then do battle with the evil sorcerer Rothbart, who tricks the Prince into declaring his love for a completely different woman, dooming Odette to remain a swan forever.
Matthew Bourne's rule-breaking take turns tradition on its head by replacing the female corps-de-ballet with a menacing male ensemble.
What the theatre critics say...
The Observer: ★★★★★ "The show that changed the dance landscape FOREVER"; Sunday Times: ★★★★★ "Still thrilling new generations. Terrific"; The Independent: "See it! Or live to regret it"
