The Science Museum is putting on a free exhibition that explores how food and food production might change to help protect the planet.

By using interactive exhibits and thought-provoking digital experiences you'll see how food has been produced throughout history, from a 3,500-year-old loaf of Egyptian bread right up to the industrialised machines of the 21st-century.

The exhibition features over a 100 historic and contemporary objects from Mendel's microscope and a potato leaf from the Irish potato famine, to the first Quorn burger, the first beef steak grown outside a cow, and a box of McDonald's nuggets.

1) The first beef steak grown outside a cow; 2) Potato and wheat plants inside a growth chamber; 3) Genetically modified salmon; 4) The oldest sample of Quorn from 1981

The exhibition will invite visitors to consider how their own habits impact the environment as their food travels through local supply chains and global trade routes, and you'll be invited to take part in a large multiplayer game where you'll choose your own food production methods to see how your decisions impact an imaginary world.

Scientists are busy creating more sustainable ways for us to grow, cook and eat our food, and the exhibition will explore the invention of synthetic fertilisers, better pesticides, and their efforts to conserve the genetic diversity of foods - from the seed-swapping ceremonies of the Amazon and Kenya's efforts to control pests with plants, to Norway's ice-cold seed vaults. It won't be long before we're all eating cricket burgers and cell-grown salmon!
