The Royal Academy of Arts is putting on a major new exhibition of works by ten of Brazil's most important 20th-century artists.

When Brazil became a republic in 1889 a new wave of painting, sculpture, music and literature swept across the country. By 1910 a new kind of modern art began emerging where artists adapted contemporary trends to their own country's culture, indigenous identity and Afro-Brazilian experiences.

Brazil's indigenous population had been largely marginalised following the arrival of Portuguese colonists and other European settlers, and fusing a new national identity from this varied mix of cultures was a challenge. But the artists who represented this new culture were just as diverse as the nation itself, and by looking inwards at the Brazil's own rich resources, they set a new course for modernism that spread right across South America.

The exhibition will showcase over 130 works by artists who are largely unfamiliar in the UK, from the trailblazer Anita Malfatti, who spearheaded the movement, to Tarsila do Amaral - one of the movement's leading female figures. Also included are Alfredo Volpi, Djanira da Motta e Silva, Rubem Valentim, and the performance artist Flávio de Carvalho.

What the critics say...

The Telegraph: ★★★★ "Visiting on a dreary winter's day will warm any sun-starved soul"; Time Out: ★★★★ "Brazilian Modernism is one delicious mouthful"; The Spectator: "A ground-breaking exhibition"
